BNP President René Thomas visits Kuwait, 1985

In the spring of 1985, BNP President René Thomas visited Kuwait to meet leaders and partners of the AREF Investment Group, in which BNP held a 22 percent stake.

André Lévy-Lang s trips to the Gulf

In May 1994, André Lévy-Lang, Chairman of the Paribas Management Board, made a trip to the United Arab Emirates with Claude de Kémoularia. During their visit, they were granted audiences with H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, and H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah. The BNP Paribas representatives also met with the governor of the Central Bank of the UAE and executives from some regulators and representatives of the region s major companies.

André Lévy-Lang returned in November 1998, when he attended an event in Doha to mark the Bank s 25 years in the Gulf.

Michel Pébereau in the United Arab Emirates

In late September 2003, BNP Paribas Chairman Michel Pébereau visited Dubai to attend the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund. Whilst in the region, he visited the Bank s Dubai and Abu Dhabi branches, accompanied by Eric Lombard, Global Head of Corporates & Financial Institutions, and Pierre Mariani, Global Head of International Retail and Financial Services. That year, the Bank was celebrating its 30th anniversary in the region, having been in the UAE since 1973.

H.R.H. Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa at BNP Paribas head office

On 20 February 2004, during an official visit to Paris, the Kingdom of Bahrain s Prime Minister, H.R.H. Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, was welcomed at BNP Paribas headquarters. The Bahraini delegation, which also included four senior ministers, was received by Jacques de Larosière39, Philippe Blavier, Jean-Jacques Santini and Jean- Christophe Durand. Whilst at the Bank s Paris headquarters, the Prime Minister made clear his approval for developing banking activity in the country.
